Abstract :
Summary form only given as follows. A high powered mobile microwave device was required to support experiments in the field. The system had the capability of providing 2 megawatt, 2 /spl mu/sec, 300 Hertz bursts of 1.3 GHz radio frequency (RF) energy. It was also required to be self contained and mobile. The system used a magnetron as a RF source. The magnetron was driven by a pulse transformer that supplied the required 50 kV at 80 amps. The pulse forming network (PFN) was resonantly charged to 20 kV from a 10 kV power supply. Then discharged, the PFN produced a 10 kV pulse across the input of the pulse transformer. The prime power was provided by a diesel generator. It supplied 208, 3 phase power to the high voltage power supply. The 110 volt house-keeping power was also provided by the generator. In this system, the generator is replaced by a battery pack. The paper gives a detailed description of the system components (source and prime power). It also provides an in-depth description of the evaluation process used to define and evaluate the various subcomponents.
