Abstract
Most long-distance water transmission pipelines are designed and constructed on the basis of constant diameter pipe; which is not always the optimum solution for this type of pipeline. Generally, the capital and operational costs of a long-distance water transmission project are very high. Therefore optimal design of a long distance transmission line is extremely valuable for lowering the project ´s capital costs and operational costs. This study establishes a linear programming model which determines the minimum project cost of a long distance water transmission system, as well as a mathematical model for the optimal design of the system in order to achieve a minimum annual cost for the transmission system. This model can then be used in the optimal design of long distance water transmission line projects
