  • Abstract
In recent times, the emanation of high lumen output white LEDs in visible light communication has become an appealing technology to realise low cost data transmission in concurrence with lighting applications. Although, appreciable amount of advancements has been witnessed in terms of broadband applications, there still remain profound unexplored areas, in terms of applicability for other area of wireless communications. One promising stretch, that could possibly revolutionise the telecommunication industry, is the deployment of optical wireless in GSM systems. Despite diminutive studies previously conducted in this field, yet a sense of reticence has been maintained by the technical community in amalgamating the two systems. A major cause for this stagnation can be attributed to the limited modulation bandwidths offered by white LEDs. The following paper intends to address this issue by introducing the concept of frequency breakdown and translation, with the proposition of a unique frequency mapping table, to accommodate GSM users into white LEDs. Alongside, prefaces a general indoor optical wireless GSM system architecture to provide cell phone connectivity to users in low or restricted RF regions. The purpose of this disquisition is to seed the employability of LEDs in GSM systems, in face of their limited modulation bandwidth.
