Abstract
Reduction in the line reactance of power transmission lines can be best obtained by the use of capacitors in series with the line conductors. The important application of the series power capacitor is to decrease voltage flicker problems. In this article, the steady-state stability limits, with series power capacitors at various locations of power transmission lines, are analyzed. The series power capacitor can be located at the sending end, the receiving end or at the center of the power line, or one-third of the distance from either end. The performance of the series power capacitor arrangement has been compared for various locations. The center of the transmission line is shown to be the most suitable choice for the optimum compensation effect of a series power capacitor
