Abstract
The Gaussian noise performance of trellis-coded modulations is well known. The authors, however, analyze the tolerance of these systems to additive pulse noise, represented by baseband pulses of finite length and arbitrary shape. Pulse noise performance of trellis-coded modulation schemes with two-, four- or 8-dimensional constellations is examined. The compared schemes are among those being considered for a new high speed dial modem CCITT recommendation. A generalized pulse noise threshold formula for any convolutional codes is derived. They conclude that different trellis-coded modulation schemes can be very close in additive Gaussian white noise (AWGN) tolerance but differ dramatically in pulse noise immunity
