Abstract
It is pointed out that control over the dielectric losses of a polypropylene-oil layer insulation system can be attained by a surface modification procedure of polypropylene (PP) foil using the plasma polymerization technique. Plasma polymers produced from chosen organic vapors have been used to demonstrate the potential usefulness of this approach. Stabilization of dielectric losses with electric field was achieved by a plasma polymer layer no more than 1000 Å thick. It is concluded that the contributions which the plasma polymerization technique can make to the design of a layer insulation include controlling the current-voltage characteristics of PP sample and decreasing the dissipation factor of the layer insulation
