Abstract :
The author describes a system which enables a reliable and cost effective bi-directional communication, regardless of distances between customer premises and low-voltage transformers. The system offers a comprehensive set of functions, capable of providing all existing communication needs arising from the relationship between the utilities and their customers, such as practical tools for remote metering, sophisticated tariffication and direct load control, as well as possible new futuristic convenience services, for both the consumer and utility. The apparatus collects data from up to 420 meters and transmits it to one point, using existing power lines for communication and utilizing existing conventional meters-as well as new electronic meters. It is equipped with sophisticated software, providing complex, multiple and flexible tariffication. It has the capability to transmit commands remotely from the utility´s central computer direct on-line, or indirect pre-programmed, to switching elements at customers´ premises
