Abstract :
The mechanism of loss increase due to static electricity is studied through a series of loss measurements of charged film. It is shown that the surface electrostatic phenomenon is not only a surface phenomenon but also a bulk one. The surface charges enter into the bulk, associated with increasing ohmic conduction and thus increasing loss of material. For the charging by surface friction or by corona injection, the principal rule is similar. When corona causes film loss to increase, it exhibits the lag phenomenon. A method of decreasing the loss is found for the virgin film, which has a very large loss
