Abstract
The major driver for the deployment of SDH technology in transport networks around the world is the benefit associated with progressive automation of network management. The target network will consist of functionally integrated network elements, combining the functionalities of many layers and perspectives interconnected by high capacity optical fibres. The nature of the client/server relationship between network layers is summarised. The CCITT are developing standards to support the deployment of automated management procedures in SDH networks. The standards for the transmission management network itself come within the TMN activity of SGIV while the standards for the transport network architecture including management features come within the SGXVIII activity
