  • Abstract
    The interaction between the human user and the computer, a central issue in systems intended to assist in higher order cognitive tasks such as decision-making, is addressed. The current research in new approaches to selecting and combining an extensive array of tools and techniques, for constructing the user interface within the context of the system requirements, to maximize human cognitive strengths and mediate the effects of their limitations are presented. Current research in terms of what we think we know about human decision-making processes is described. Advanced information technology tools and techniques are considered. The research agenda, using cognitive systems engineering principles for human computer-interaction (HCI) design, is outlined. Research in HCI design should provide a significant contribution in terms of how principles from cognitive science and the latest advances in information technology may be combined to engineer systems which promote improved decision-making performance in complex environments
