Recent advances in doped fibres for optical telecommunications

Abstract :
In current telecommunications systems optical fibre is used as a passive transmission medium, but by doping the core of the fibre it is possible to facilitate optical interactions and thus construct optical devices such as amplifiers and switches. The author reviews recent developments in this field, describing first, work on optical amplifiers fabricated from erbium-doped and highly germania-doped silica fibre, followed by an account of the fabrication of fibres with enhanced optical nonlinearity for routing and switching applications
