Abstract
The author looks at pressure imposed on power supply designers in Australia and the initiatives taken by Telecom Australia to ensure timely development of a national power supply standard for use by the telecommunications industry. He provides as background information an overview of Australian and other countries practices on DC power distribution in telephone exchanges and communications centers and contrasts these to the requirements of the Australian electrical industry standard, Australian Wiring Rules. The thrust of the standard is to maintain and if possible enhance the proven existing telecommunications power practices and to define a uniform, consistent, safe and cost-effective basis for the design, installation and operation of a communications DC power plant in the present and near future
