Abstract :
The author describes how the NATO´s interest in the OSI programme first became apparent in order to achieve greater interoperability between digital communication systems and the setting up of NIMP (NATO interoperability management plan) for the adoption of OSI. He also describes a SANTIS (single-architecture NATO technical interface standard) which is currently composed of a family of STANAGs (standardisation agreements). The enhancements needed to meet the military requirements in the current ISO/CCITT based standards are described in detail
