Abstract
Describes the design, implementation, evaluation of a computer-aided diagnostic system (the G&T system) and its application in the field of gastroenterology. One of the distinct features of the methodology implemented in the system is that is does not assume independence among symptoms. The basic architecture of the system has five major parts: a database of a large number of accumulated medical data relating to an application field; a training procedure for extracting combinations of relevant symptoms for each diagnostic group; a matching procedure for detecting significant symptoms; a decision making procedure to choose a diagnosis from all possible diagnoses; and an evaluation procedure for measuring the correctness of the computer diagnoses
