Abstract
The work described by the authors forms part of a research project sponsored by the Office of Innovative Science and Technology of the SDI organisation. The need for the work arises from the recognition that future spacecraft particularly those involved in defence operations, and those intended to carry large numbers of personnel, will require considerably greater electrical power than is available in present systems. Higher voltage imply insulation problems and these will be the problems traditionally associated with vacuum since the natural vacuum of space will certainly be utilised as the insulant. The present work is aimed initially at identifying the outgassed products from a variety of solid polymeric insulating materials and assessing the effect of their presence on the dielectric behaviour of insulating systems in vacuum
