  • Abstract
    A motion compensated interframe prediction (MCIP) coder incorporating subband vector quantization is presented. The coder is based on two dimensional subband decomposition of the error image obtained after MCIP. The luminance and chrominance subbands, generated after the decomposition process, form image vectors which are then quantized using vector quantization. Low bit rates typically at 64 kbit/sec for videotelephony applications can be achieved by selecting only significant image vectors for transmission. A data compression algorithm that combines subband coding concepts and conventional VQ is used
