Abstract
The author describes the limitations of individual LANs and how they may be overcome by the use of multiple LANs interconnected by bridges. The current bridging standards are summarised and a non-standard but frequently used class of encapsulating bridges is described. These types of bridges are compared and directions for future development of encapsulating bridges are proposed
