Abstract
The author examines how written documents alter the interactions of the participants in a writing situation or context-specifically, those in a classroom setting. She suggests that written documents introduce a specific contextual variable that can change the dynamics of any situation-academic or nonacademic-pointing to the need for careful preparation of students of professional and technical communication in interpersonal and small group communication
