Abstract
Outlines the requirements of pulse shaping networks for digital optical receivers and an optimisation strategy (modified Chernoff bound) that has been successfully employed to design these filters for low bit-rate systems. A technology and associated design technique that can be used to extend the design process to systems operating at state-of-the-art bit-rates is outlined. The results presented clearly establish the suitability of the technology and design process for the realisation of pulse-shaping filter structures to meet the exacting requirements of evolving very high bit-rate optical systems
