Abstract :
Irradiations of nano-structured metal films by ultrashort laser pulses excite surface plasmon wave packets, which propagate along the metal-dielectric interface for tens of femtoseconds. Recently developed novel time-resolved microscopic methods enable to take movies of the evolutions of them. We show photoemission electron microscopy and two-photon fluorescence microscopy, respectively combined with near-ultraviolet and near-infrared 10-femtosecond lasers, reveal dissipative propagations of wave packets launched from nano-scale slits formed in a silver film. The dynamical properties of wave packets such as group and phase velocities, and propagation lengths are well comparable to the values evaluated by using complex wavevectors of the surface plasmon polariton modes.
