Abstract
A composite-resonator vertical-cavity laser (CRVCL) contains two optically coupled and electrically independent cavities. In this work, we demonstrate the coupled cavity structure can be utilized to pre- emphasize direct modulation and thus enhance the laser modulation bandwidth. The result of the pre-emphasis is a more open eye diagram. Since the electroabsorption also induces additional laser loss, it needs to be kept small to avoid canceling the bandwidth enhancement from the pre-emphasis. Optimization of the coupled-cavity structure could further reduce laser loss and achieve higher modulation rates.
