Abstract
It is noted that the step-by-step format is geared towards the presentation of linear information, and the incorporation of nonlinear information, such as cross references, into this format can lead to substantial usability problems. However, the step-by-step format is also flexible and can be tailored to minimize these problems by (1) minimizing cross references, (2) formatting cross references effectively, and (3) incorporating place-keeping aids into manuals that contain cross references
