Abstract
Adaptive techniques applied to receive antennas are a well established technology. However, the application of adaptive techniques to transmitting antennas has not been pursued. An example of adaptively controlling a transmitting antenna is described. The application that motivated this adaptive transmit antenna concept is personal communication systems where user antennas are required to have broad antenna coverage to avoid antenna pointing requirements. The broad coverage characteristics of the antenna unavoidably results in multipath susceptibility that degrades the performance. This new adaptive transmit antenna provides a means to reduce the multipath in the transmit case. Multipath distortions on transmission reduce the isolation between multiple users in CDMA systems, which is a well known limit on overall system capacity.
