Abstract :
Describes the experimental setup designed for the measurement of 37 GHz electromagnetic wave attenuation and depolarisation caused by raindrops. The experiment was performed at the Czech Technical University (CTU). The system is situated on the roof position of the CTU building in Prague. The length of the experimental link is 52 m, and the receiver and transmitter antennas are located 35 m above the terrain. The experiment is used for the measurement of the attenuation, and cross-polarization discrimination (XPD). After completion it will be possible to measure the complete transmission matrix. Theoretical attenuation for the vertical and horizontal polarisation is shown as a function of the rain-rate at this frequency. The attenuation as the function of the rain rate R is satisfactorily expressed by the functional form of Oguchi (1983). Using a simple comparison method the authors verified the XPD of the experimental link. An XPD better then 30 dB was achieved
