Abstract
The authors address a number of aspects related to the application of optical coherent techniques in the subscriber loop of future integrated broadband systems. Firstly the opportunities offered by coherent multichannel (CMC) techniques for the implementation of distribution and dialogue services and for the realisation of new switching architectures are presented. This is followed by a description of the present state of the art with respect to systems and components. Then comparisons are made between CMC techniques and time multiplexing schemes and subcarrier multiplexing schemes. Finally a description of the objectives and technical approach of the RACE 1010 project (Subscriber CMC system) is presented
