Abstract
The Edinburgh Designer System (EDS) is a program intended to provide intelligent support to people engaged in design activities. In supporting the design activity it clearly makes sense to let the program deal with what computers do best while leaving the designer to get on with what (s)he is clearly more capable of. To this end EDS provides support in the generating, recording, and organising of knowledge about a particular design, leaving the designer to make the decisions and intuitive leaps. To organise efforts to implement such support a model of design as an exploration process has been developed
