Abstract :
Telecommunication service providers are seeking effective ways to upgrade their communications services to underserved regions in response to universal access initiatives. End-users and regulators in these regions demand both inexpensive basic service and advanced communications capabilities. These conflicting requirements present an opportunity for geostationary satellite architectures. This paper presents an evolutionary strategy for implementing geostationary satellite networks in unserved or underserved regions to support hundreds of thousands of users. The solution is a set of generic architectures that apply globally with adaptations to local requirements. These alternatives allow system operators to tailor networks to specific market requirements
