  • Abstract
Certain strategic research issues that arise in research on advanced software for intelligent engineering support systems are reviewed. The application area concerns devices and mechanisms drawn from electrical and mechanical engineering. The tasks of design and diagnosis are taken as key areas for the exploitation of artificial intelligence research. A brief discussion of the limitations of existing technology leads into the fundamental issues which current and future research must examine in order to produce intelligent design and diagnosis tools of the future
