Abstract :
Describes a multivariate analysis technique for M-ary PSK direct detection subcarrier broadcast optical networks. The optimum modulation index, avalanche photodiode gain and number of levels M may all be determined at the planning stage. Additionally, maximum permissible relative intensity noise may be assessed. Allowable network distribution loss is then specified by the resultant receiver sensitivity. In a five channel example, a 4-PSK format was seen to have a small sensitivity advantage compared to 2-PSK. The 8-and 16- PSK schemes both introduce penalties compared to 2-PSK
