  • Abstract
Summary form only given. Long wavelength, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) operating at 1.3 and 1.55 /spl mu/m wavelengths have been the focus of much research recently as potentially low-cost sources for optical communications. Much investigation has been done into the transmission of digital signals over optical fiber for the use of these devices in telecommunication applications. In this paper, we believe we present the results of the first reported analog transmission experiments for long wavelength VCSELs. The devices exhibited good values of dynamic range and low intermodulation distortion. This points to the potential use of VCSELs for CATV incorporated with optical fiber to the home and other applications such as microwave signal transmission.
