Abstract :
In this paper an IOT electron gun with an established track record in UHF broadcast and science application was analyzed to determine the change of bunch waveform and fundamental rf current versus frequency. The results were 1) it turned out that deviations from the theoretically predicted bunch waveform already occurred at about 100 MHz, obviously without ever having deteriorated the performance of the existing IOTs. 2) the useful fundamental rf current carried by the bunches did not drop significantly until about 2 GHz. There was no magical threshold. Based on this result, a complete 1.3 kW continuous wave L-band IOT was simulated, maintaining the described gun configuration.
