Abstract
Moderate pulse compression ratios can be obtained with passive devices, where a phase-modulated microwave pulses is transmitted through a non-reflecting system of resonant cavities. At short centimeter wavelengths, quasi-axially symmetric open cavities can be used; whispering gallery modes being diffusively coupled to the relevant modes of relevant open feed wave-guides. At millimeter wavelengths, circular multi-mirror cavities fed by Gaussian wave beams through corrugated mirrors seem to be the best option. Bi-resonant systems fed by frequency modulated(chirped) pulses provide parameters not obtainable using to the well-known SLED approach.
