Abstract
We have shown, in an earlier paper, that Mobiles with Transmit Diversity (MTD) can improve the reverse link capacity of a CDMA network. We also demonstrated, in the several field trials, that the MTD mobiles can reduce the mobiles transmit power and increase the mobiles´ upload data rate. The diversity gain of MTD mobile is defined as the TX power reduction, compared to the (regular) mobiles using single antenna. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between the mobile diversity gain and the reverse link capacity gain of a CDMA network. We can then derive the reverse link capacity gains of a network from the mobile diversity gains, those would be easier to measure. Furthermore, we can estimate the network capacity improvement for the mobile population with partial MTD mobiles and partial regular (single antenna) mobiles. This analysis is based on the several field trial results, that showed the 45% and 42% capacity gain have been observed for Cellular CDMA and (US) PCS CDMA networks, respectively.
