Abstract :
Realistic moving images of a head-and shoulders can be produced using fairly standard techniques of computer graphics. Convincing articulatory movements of the mouth are generated in addition to other facial expression changes such as eyebrow movements. The same sort of internal model used to improve the appearance of the mouth could also be used for the eyes in order to generate realistic blinking. The model can only be rotated by a limited amount but this is not considered an important factor as the system is intended for a videophone application. The work described constitutes only the synthesis aspect of a model-based coding scheme; the problems inherent in the image analysis side are currently being addressed
