The way forward for knowledge elicitation-psychologist or engineer?

The key features of knowledge engineering which distinguish it from more conventional systems design are outlined, and some of the skills which are useful in knowledge engineering are described. Some suggestions for developing such skills are also proposed. For those who are happy to study unfamiliar subjects and who are prepared to cope with and under uncertainty there are many prospects. It is almost certain that a willingness to learn and ask questions of other people is more important than any particular subject background. There is a clear need for more organized training of knowledge engineers. In the longer term it may be necessary to revise undergraduate programmes to include more material from nontechnical but highly relevant subjects
