Multimedia: a perspective

The author explains the terms multimedia, multi-modal and multi-modality and whether they convey important distinctions. Some of the technical developments which have given rise to the recent burgeoning of interest in this topic are outlined. The author then turns to cognitive psychology for some guidance about the effects on the user, before concluding with a personal view of what seems important about all this for the design of interactive learning systems
