Abstract
Describes the use of Mascot real time networks in distributed system design. First the basic concepts of real time networks are discussed, followed by an outline of those aspects of the Mascot 3 notation which are particularly relevant in the design of multi-processor and distributed systems. Then a novel Data Interaction Architecture (DIA) is introduced which supports the use of network design principles for application in multi-processor configurations where communication is through shared memory. This DIA is extended to include the use of active communication elements for application in wider forms of distribution. Finally some design and implementation issues are addressed
