Abstract
Wireless IEEE 802.11a systems are expected to become an important cornerstone of future generation heterogeneous networks. Their efficient operation and adaptation to the variable channel conditions is a must. This paper derives a novel analytical model for the throughput performance of IEEE 802.11a systems. Unlike previous work, the model in this paper is based on realistic assumptions, i.e. non-saturation mode of operation, Rayleigh fading channel and contentions in the medium. The model is then used for discussing optimization of the IEEE 802.11a system behavior through optimal frame length and transmission mode selection under various channel conditions and communication scenarios
