Abstract :
Kevlar®ropes used as oceanographic mooring lines potentially offer the advantages of corrosion resistance, low stretch combined with high strength and low specific gravity. Tests completed at sea to date on a variety of line constructions to evaluate the performance of the material in the ocean environment, have resulted in ambiguous but disappointing results. Strength degradations have been noted that reduce its desirability as a long term mooring line material. More testing must therefore be completed to determine the reasons for the noted strength reductions so that methods or eliminating the problem may be found.
