  • Abstract
The importance of complete information regarding system parameters in the specification of a cable is discussed. System parameters to be covered include cable performance and mission profile, environmental consideration, verification testing, the cable handling system and connection features. The impact of these parameters on the material and construction features of the cable is discussed in terms on the effect on life and reliability. The mechanical effect of various cable handling operations are related to life and reliability. Successfully used spooling procedures, the trade-offs for zero rotation torque balance in and the major factors affecting flexure fatigue life are studied. The effects of corrosion in a salt water environment together with successful techniques currently being used to minimize this corrosion are also studied.
