Abstract
Technology in the millimetre wave region of the spectrum has made significant advances. Millimetre wave components, up to 200 GHz, have moved from the laboratory curiosities to space qualified systems with proven performance and reliability. There are now several proposals for systems operating at about 600 GHz and higher frequencies. These advances have been made possible mainly by improvements in mixer manufacturing techniques, the availability of suitable diodes, the development of quasi-optical components and local oscillators. The author looks at total power radiometers, the microwave limb sounder (MLS) and the Earth Observing System MLS
