Abstract :
Theoretical and experimental results on high-gain planar antennas, which allow different antenna pattern widths for the TE (transverse electric) and TM (transverse magnetic) plane, are presented. Simulated and measured results are in good agreement. It is shown that the array elements could be spaced further apart than in a conventional array while still keeping the sidelobes at a reasonable level. This is because one dipole illuminates an aperture of several wavelengths. Thus, this type of antenna seems to be a good potential candidate for replacing subarrays of large planar array antennas, since it will reduce the losses and expense of the feeding structure in comparison to conventional patch dipoles in the millimeter-wave region.<>
