Abstract :
In photochemical treatments for carbon dioxide (CO2) recovery, a suitable photolytic material and a photon device have been required. In this work, a photochemical reaction for CO2 adsorption to calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) is experimentally investigated. The photon device is evaluated by the photochemical effect of vacuum ultraviolet irradiation from a Xe discharge lamp. The experiment is conducted in following procedures: (1) the generation of OH and H radicals and the conversion to calcium oxide (CaO) from moisturized Ca(OH)2 powder activated by ultraviolet irradiation, (2) the conversion of CO2 to other molecules such as HCO3 and H2CO3 with generated OH and H radicals, and (3) the final conversion of CaO with generated HCO3 and H2CO3 to calcium carbonate (CaCO3). The CO2 removal processes and the fundamental characteristic obtained from an experimental approach are presented.
