Abstract :
Upon completion of the initial boost of the Space Shuttle Orbiter, the Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) system components will be jettisoned into the ocean. Recovery of these components required the development of specialized equipment and recovery techniques. Equipments and procedures for component recovery and stowage aboard a specially equipped Surface Support Craft are discussed. Upon impact, the three main parachutes of the SRB case will separate and will be supported by individual floats with location aids. The frustum, separated front the SRB case while descending, upon impact will upend and float on the surface along with its parachute, support float and location aids. A unique recovery method is required for the frustum as there are no lift or tie-down points. The equipments and techniques chosen were formulated through a series of systematic tests and trade-off studies.
