Abstract
Advances in compression technology allied to parallel developments in digital processing and storage have led to the development of video codecs capable of providing subjectively excellent picture quality at comparatively modest data rates. The author describes a 34 Mbit/s codec and its associated monitoring and control arrangements that will be used by British Telecom for a particular broadcast quality video distribution application
