Abstract
The design of practical closed loop control systems frequently makes deliberate use of approximate plant models. This is either because the available model is regarded as too complex for design work or because it is known to exhibit both structural and data uncertainties. Alternatively, an accurate plant model may simply not be available. In the paper, a number of aspects are considered using the experience gained in the development of a computer aided design package. Particular attention is paid to (i) the data processing and storage requirements during design, (ii) the choice of approximate model on which to base controller design, (iii) the generating and/or inputting of the basic error data, and (iv) man machine interface aspects. Further, the use of this package is highlighted by application to an example and some possible future developments of it are outlined
