Abstract :
Third generation (3G) mobile communication is a reality today. For the communication and processing in the 3G networks the integration of cellular networks concept and internet protocol is necessary. The use of IP in 3G networks brings the vulnerability of some attacks like denial of service (DoS), distributed denial of service attack (DDoS) in the networks. This paper deals with specific type of DoS attacks like paging attack and signaling attack and aims to consider paging and signaling attack with propose solution to overcome these attacks. The main reason behind both the attacks is that, there is no perfect mutual authentication procedure at the time of paging. This paper proposes three types of solutions: a randomization, anomaly based protection method and fragmentation of IP sets to protect the network traffic from such attacks. By using this method the attackers will be restricted to inject heavy traffic into the paging channel (PCH) and it will result in minimizing the impact of attack. In addition of these solutions we have given a mathematical analysis to calculate the effectiveness of the solutions for legitimate and non-legitimate paging traffic.
