Abstract :
Software and hardware projects can be managed more effectively if configuration management is woven into the architecture of the software development environment. The availability of active, rather than historical information concerning the project development is a key productivity factor. The paper describes PCMS, a system that supports configuration management and other product management activities within a project with a plug-in architecture that is easy to interface to existing environments and supports both central and distributed systems. It evolved through intensive prototyping to becoming a mature product within the ITT and ALCATEL NV corporations
