Abstract :
The paper analyses the use of the Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) and the High Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI) (representative for Mbitls and Gbitls fiber-optic communication links) as a communication network for distributed, parallel computing systems. The evaluation of the FDDI throughput and delay is obtained by analytic simulation and by analysis of Stochastic Petri Net (SPN) model parameters. Further, the paper deals with the latency and bandwidth in distributed, high-performance (Mbit1s, Gbit1s, and future Tbit1s) systems and shows that distributed, high-performance computing and networking systems have forced us to deal with the propagation delay within the system due to the limited speed of light. 1 2 3 4indicate that the user must pay attention to his file sizes and how latency win affect his applications. Models and results can be used for computer aided modeling, analysis and design of modem communication system, based on parallel computers and Mbitl´s or Gbitls fiber optic communication links.
