Abstract
In the 21st century, telecommunications and computers will be combined into information network systems in order to satisfy the demands from the enormous increases in information and communication required by society and industry. To satisfy this demand, optoelectronics and material technologies will be of great importance. In this paper, we discuss the future direction and prospects for optoelectronics technologies, including the “optoelectronics technology road map”, which covers telecommunication and memory technologies. We examine the role of device and material technologies in realizing the goal of the telecommunications network for the “wealthy society” of the 21st century
